Blessing Muzarabani, a Zimbabwe pace bowler, is
expected to join IPL debutants Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the IPL 2022 season.
For his country - Zimbabwe, the 25-year-old pacer has appeared in six Tests, 30 One-Day Internationals, and 21 Twenty-20 International matches. After eight years, Muzarabani became the first Zimbabwean to play in the high-profile league.
There have been no formal hearings from either the IPL or the franchise, but Muzarabani is expected to replace England pacer Mark Wood. According to recent reports, Wood sustained an elbow injury in the first Test between the West Indies and England in Antigua.
The Indian embassy in Zimbabwe posted a photo of the ambassador with Muzarabani late Monday night, announcing that the Zimbabwean national player is heading to India to play for the Lucknow Super Giants. They wrote in their official social media account and wished the Zimbabwean bowler the very best.
Muzurbani, who has 25 wickets at an economy rate of 8 in 21 T20 International matches, could become the first Zimbabwean to play in the IPL in eight years. Brendan Taylor, a former Zimbabwean cricketer, was a member of the Sunrisers Hyderabad roster in the IPL 2014, but he never played a match for the Orange Army. Taylor was then released prior of the 2015 IPL season. Other Zimbabwe players who have been featured in the IPL include Ray Price (Mumbai Indians) and Tatenda Taibu (Kolkata Knight Riders).
It has been speculated that LSG might replace Wood with Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed. However, it did not happen as the Bangladesh Cricket Board refused to give a No-Objection Certificate due to national commitments.
The Lucknow Super Giants will be captained by Indian opener KL Rahul. He has previously led the Pubjab Kings in the cash-rich league for the past two seasons.
The LSG will make its debut on March 28 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai against the Gujarat Titans, who are also making their debut.
